DESIGN ON A DIME | Home & Monograms

In the last six months, I've added a lot of little things to our apartment decor.  All the additions have been extremely cheap, thrifted, or homemade.  I am so proud of myself.

HOME - four thick cardboard letters from Hobby Lobby - under a dollar a piece.  Painted white with a craft paint - under two dollars.  Arranged vertically and close together, because I like typography that way, and funtacked to the wall.

L&M - Instead of a bulky headboard, I bought super-sized frames and mats from IKEA.  I made the L&M monogram design in Publisher in about 15 minutes and had the design blown up at Office Max - both were under 20 bucks.  The name Liza means consecrated to God and Mark means mighty warrior.

Dear Design on a Dime,

Yes, I will come be a special guest on your show.  Thanks for asking.

THEN: Labor Day weekend 2009 @ Lifelight with James, our nephew.  First time we admitted we were dating.  First time I met Mark's family.

NOW: Labor Day weekend 2011 @ Lifelight sans nephew.  Married almost a year!

Oh, how I would love to be more concerned with what the Lord thinks of me than with what others are thinking.

Though I may have a reputation of being a "good" person, what are the Lord's judgments concerning me?

I need His help.  Like, big time.

Earlier today, I was getting some work done at a local coffee shop.

I had to go to the bathroom, so I took my purse with me, since I didn't want any bad guys stealing my twenty dollar bill or pack of gum or chapstick.

Before I got to the bathroom, terrible stories on Dateline and 20/20 flashed into my memory about date rape drugs in drinks.

...So I turned around, and brought my coffee WITH me to the bathroom.

Nevermind that there were only two 70-year old men in the coffee shop, in addition to a teeny bopper dude behind the cash register.

It is 2011 and you just never know, folks.

M&L CONVO | Friends

Mark:  Love's Like a Hurricane.

Me: You mean How He Loves?

Mark: Yeah, that one.

Me.  I hate that song.

Mark:  How about Friends Are Friends Forever?

Me: blank look.

Mark: Friends are Friends Forever THROWBACK.

Me:  blank look.

Mark:  Come on!  Michael W. Smith?  He would love it.

Me: Mark, we don't sing about friends at Harp & Bowl.  We sing about the Lord.

Mark: BUT! The Lord made friends.

Me: blank look.

Mark: after a few moments.  cocky.  Jesus is MY friend.

Me: ignoring.

Mark:  to himself.  It will be a hit...

It was a BEAUTIFUL fall day today.  I woke up early to do some cooking and cleaning (the in-laws were coming over) and opened all the windows.  A while later, I caught a whiff of a campfirey-fallish sort of smell in the air.  Love.

"Mark!  Smell that!  Yum.  It smells like fall."

10 minutes later...

"Our neighbors must be having a campfire!  Doesn't it smell like a campfire, Mark?  Campfires are wonderful."

10 minutes later...

"Lord, you are so nice to me.  You know how much I love fall, fresh air coming through the windows and campfires.  You're so great."

10 minutes later...

"Mark, maybe we should shut the windows...  Our whole house is going to smell like a campfire pretty soon.  It's kind of strong."

10 minutes later...

"MARK.  Shut. The. Windows.  It smells like a smokestack in here."

5 minutes later...

Great.  Mark's parents are going to be here any second and our apartment is rank.  We will not even be able to taste our food over the hillbilly campground smell.

30 seconds later...I started unloading the dishwasher.

I found one of my wooden spoons in the bottom of the dishwasher, on top of the water heater coil, sizzling.

"Um, Mark?  It was not a campfire.  You can open the windows again."

Read THIS and THIS first!

My friend Kristin is beautiful because...  She loves the Lord so much...and His beauty shines through her everyday!  When we are together, the conversation always turns to how God has been at work in her life and about what she's learning from Him.  Kristin has a refreshing, down-to-earth perspective on health and wellness - she holds me accountable in times where I'd like to give up and just be a couch potato!  She's never content to stay in a rut, always learning, always growing, always desiring more that just "average".  Kristin is inspiring!  She's crazy athletic, but also super creative and artistic.  No matter what she's doing or creating, it always seem to point to the Lord.  What follows is from Kristin!

About Kristin...
I am a 22 year old woman fresh out of college, planted into a new apartment with a new husband, new career and a new REAL life!  I love to use my passion for full life (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual) to share Jesus with people.  I love creating things, whether a recipe, painting or an outfit.  I love reading, running, coffee, peanut butter, and long, deep chats.

Real Beauty to Kristin...
Honestly, I'm a nature girl.  I love the stars, running outdoors, swimming in the ocean...  My creations never match up to God's!  Natural beauty, to me, is waking up in the morning joyful to be in the skin I'm in.

Her Can't-Live-Withouts...
My journaling Bible, genuine community, my husband, a good breakfast, a good place to run.

The Thing/s She's Most Proud of...
I boast in Christ! :)  Is that a Sunday School answer??

Her Top Insecurity/s and How She's Fights Them...
I wish I had better complexion and that my legs were skinnier, etc.  I'm naturally very critical of myself, so I don't spend as much time thinking about the blessings in my life as I should.  I long to always be a "cup half full" person.  God has recently been giving me more peace and security in my body.  When Satan tries to take me down the "critic" road, I try to fight back.  Heck no!  I won't go!  I recently discovered a love for my arms, and I love my eyes.

How God's Been at Work in Her Life...
God has been teaching me lots about myself in this season...  He's been teaching me that I need to learn lots more about what it means to rest.  Rest in Him and trust Him.  Surrender control more often and open my eyes to what He's doing.

Kristin also recommends checking out the song "Restless" by Audrey Assad, and the verse I Corinthians 13:12.

Didn't I tell you she's beautiful?  I am blessed to have crazy beautiful friends.

From Desiring God's Blog...
Henry Scougal:
It is true, religion in the souls of men is the immediate work of God, and all our natural endeavors can neither produce it alone, nor merit those supernatural aids by which it must be wrought: the Holy Ghost must come upon us, and the power of the Highest must overshadow us, before that holy thing can be begotten, and Christ be formed in us:
But yet we must not expect that this whole work should be done without any concurring endeavours of our own: we must not lie loitering in the ditch, and wait till Omnipotence pull us from thence;
no, no! we must bestir ourselves to our utmost capacities, and then we may hope that, ‘our labour shall not be in vain in the Lord ‘ (1 Corinthians 15:58).
(One of my favorite verses...)
